Welp. Bungie has decided to end the live service for Destiny 2. On June 9th 2026, Bungie will deliver Destiny 2’s last live service content update.
I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. Ever since the Final Shape, Destiny 2 has struggled to reach player counts that justify it’s development. However, to end the development mid story (the current story is the Fate Saga and Bungie has released only 2 out of the 4 expansions they announced) is a bit strange.
That’s not the only strange thing.
Destiny 3 Is Coming, Right?
When Bungie announced the end of live service updates for Destiny 2, they did so with a blog post which seemed to hint quite heavily that a Destiny 3 or new Destiny of some sort was in the works – or at least would be soon.
“Every End Is A New Beginning” was the title of the post.
“While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2”.
“We will begin work incubating our next games”.
“Once we have more news to share on Destiny, you’ll be the first to know”.
After reading all that, it’s hard not to believe that a Destiny 3, being the obvious path forward, is about to begin development. Why it hasn’t already been in development at this point is baffling though.
Monument of Triumph
So, the renamed Shadow and Order update is now called Monument of Triumph and will be the final update Destiny 2 receives (except for maybe some small patches after the launch of this content).

A free update for all guardians, Monument of Triumph will include the return of the Director, story beats to leave characters in interesting places, Pantheon 2.0, all raid and dungeon loot updated, destination loot updated, a new sandbox update including new aspects, grenades and abilities, an overhaul to the portal and additions/updates to the playlist activities in the game.

There is also going to be a change to the Eververse store, updates to Bright Engrams, the Rewards Pass and they’re even bundling the whole game into one big expansion pack that you can buy – which will include all the expansions in the game and finally all Dungeon Keys and the 30th Anniversary Pack.

SRL (Sparrow Racing League)
Not only all that – they also announced the return of fan favourite activity, Sparrow Racing League.

A new weapon set, returning SRL armour with a set bonus, original Destiny tracks and a new one will be available when SRL comes to Destiny 2.
The End
After announcing all the headline things for the update and the big news that this will be the last live service update for Destiny 2, Bungie go on to thank players for their many years of loyalty. They again reiterate that their focus will be to continue to makes games we are excited to play.
I’m honestly at a loss for words on this one. It’s a decision that I just don’t understand from both a business/financial point of view and a PR point of view. Destiny is a franchise with no replacement in the gaming industry. Many other studios have tried to make a “Destiny-like” and failed. There is no other game like it and it leaves a gaping whole in the industry – one you would think Sony would want to dominate. Insane.
